Buju (BNXN) was born to the mixed family of Mr. and Mrs. Benson on the 19th Of May 1997. He has both Akwa Ibom and Yoruba roots. His father hails from the South-South region while his mother is from the South West. He was named Daniel Benson by his parents.
He was born in Lagos State, where he spent part of his formative years before moving to the neighboring Ogun State. While living in Ogun, he resided in the town of Mowe.
His parents are Christians, which explains the source of his first name. He was raised as a Christian and attended church every week.
Living in Lagos did two things to Buju (BNXN). The first was that he learned the Yoruba language much more quickly, as it was one of the predominant languages in the city. The second was that he was exposed to the rich Nigerian music culture. And this exposure birthed in Buju (BNXN) a desire to make music.
With time, he began to do the covers of songs by some of his favorite artists, such as P-Square, D’banj, 2Baba, 9ice, and Olu Maintain. He would often thrill his friends in school and in the neighborhood with these songs. As he advanced in age, he began to compose original songs while improving his singing and rap skills.
Daniel Benson who became popular with the stage name Buju (BujuToYourEars) or newly addressed as BNXN, is a 24 years old Nigerian singer and songwriter. He was conceived in 1997 in the Gbagada area of Lagos State but relocated to Mowe, Ogun State.
Coming from a middle-class household gave Buju (BNXN) access to quality education. He attended top private schools in Lagos for his elementary and secondary school education.
He bagged a degree from the elite Babcock University, Ogun State.
While in the university, Buju (BNXN) steadily pursued his dream of becoming a music superstar. He kept on composing new songs and refining his sound in the process. During this phase, he went by the stage name, Drizzle.
The decision to change his name to Buju (BNXN) came after being fired at work (internship) for listening to music during office hours. At the time he received his termination letter, he had been listening to the song of Jamaican dance hall artiste Buju Banton. More so, the name Buju means “a chubby kid” in Jamaica, which resonates with his physical appearance.
His official debut single, Catch A Vibe, was released in February 2018. The song did fairly well in the market, winning him new fans beyond his close friends. Later that year, he dropped a second single titled, A Day In Lagos. This song did better than his first, as he gained popularity on Twitter and Soundcloud. That same year, he dropped two more singles, Aje and Balance It, to maintain the heat of his growing fame.
However, it was until 2019 that Buju (BNXN) struck gold in the industry. This came after he recorded the single, Spiritual, and promoted the song on social media. His promotion tactics worked as the song went viral on the internet.
He decided to do the remix of the single and reached out to rapper Zlatan Ibile for a collaboration. After weeks of tagging Zlatan Ibile to the song’s video on social media, the older artiste reposted the song on his social media handles and agreed to be featured on the song.
As soon as the remix of Spiritual was released, it became an instant hit and brought Buju (BNXN) to the limelight.
Fortune smiled on Buju (BNXN) again in 2020 when he linked up with Burna Boy. The Grammy Award Winner had heard Buju (BNXN)‘s single Lenu in the club and became interested in working with the rising artiste. The duo collaborated on Lenu (Remix), which solidified Buju (BNXN)‘s stance as one of the promising acts in the industry.
After that, he signed a record deal with Spaceship Collective, owned by Burna Boy. He exited the label in April 2021 after the expiration of his contract and founded his own music imprint – To Your Ears Entertainment.
Shortly after, he released the single, Outside, which was a hit across the country. The song received massive airplay on radio stations and recorded millions of streams within months of its release.
In 2021, he appeared as a featured artist on Feeling by Ladipoe. The feeling was one of the top-charting singles of 2021, sitting at the top of the TurnTable Top 50 Chart.
Buju (BNXN) released his debut EP, Sorry I Came Late, under Too Your Ears Entertainment. The Extended Play is a 7-track project composed of the following top-charting singles – Daniel Benson, Never Stopped, Kilometer, Something Sweet, Ogechukwu (featuring The Cavemen), I Do, and For Here.
He was one of the guest artists who appeared on Wizkid‘s Made In Lagos Deluxe Edition. He lent his vocals to the single, Mood.
In 2022, Buju (BNXN) was featured on the remix of Dai Verse‘s hit single, Sweet Daddy. The song was released in February 2022.
The Akwa Ibom State indigene superstar, Buju (BNXN) became popular through social media after requesting that the audience help him in tagging Zlatan Ibile to a viral recording session video he posted so that he could dash him a free verse which came to pass.
After the viral video and a blessed verse from Zlatan, Buju (BNXN)was signed by Burna Boy to Spaceship Records with a remix to his single L’enu featuring Burna Boy being used as an introductory anthem for him. He was also featured on Feeling by Ladipoe.
