The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Foundation has mentored secondary school students to become champions of environmental preservation.

The girls were selected from secondary schools in Azare, Katagum LGA of Bauchi.

The foundation also engaged the students on practical tree planting exercise as part of activities marking the 2024 World Environment Day with the theme ‘Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience’ held at the Government Girls’ Day Secondary School Azare.

Speaking during the sensitisation and tree planting exercise, the Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Mrs Emmanuella Arukwe, said the mission of the foundation was to support environmental sustainability through impactful initiatives such as reforestation, conservation and education.

“The NNPC Foundation is committed to continue the monitoring of these plants at all locations to restore degraded lands, build resilience against drought and improve livelihoods,” she said.

The MD, who was represented by Engr Mohammed Hashim Bawa, stated that the focus of the tree planting was to inculcate practical, hands-on skills to ensure active participation in the tree planting exercise to instill a sense of responsibility and ownership towards environmental conservation.
