Man Arrested After Businessman’s Murder Outside Rustenburg Restaurant
North West police have made a breakthrough in their investigation of the August murder of 49-year-old businessman Ben Gumbi outside a Rustenburg CBD restaurant , which was captured on camera.
The video footage of the shooting went viral on social media.
Police arrested Sibongiseni Ngubane in Germiston on Tuesday where he had appeared in court on an unrelated charge of armed robbery, police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said.
Ngubane appeared in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on a charge of murder and is expected to return on Tuesday.
Gumbi was gunned down by two males outside a restaurant in the Rustenburg Central Business District (CBD).
In the viral video footage of the incident, Gumbi can be seen looking at his phone in front of white tables and chairs.
Two men creep up behind him, firing at almost point-blank range. He collapses after he is shot in the head and torso.
Mokgwabone said Gumbi had just arrived at the coffee shop when he was shot.
The shooters fled in a blue Volkswagen Polo, which was found abandoned on the corner of Helen Joseph and Lourie Streets a few minutes after the incident.
